You can start an interior design business in Tanzania with about TSh 3 to 15 million (roughly USD 1,100 to 5,700) for a capable laptop, design software, samples, a basic portfolio and marketing. The business earns in two ways: design fees for drawings, 3D visuals and material selections, and fit-out work, where you also supply and install ceilings, partitions, flooring, joinery, lighting and furniture. Design-only is cheaper to start and lower risk. Fit-out earns more per project but needs working capital, reliable fundis and, for larger commercial jobs, a CRB-registered contractor partner or your own specialist registration.
We do interior fit-outs for offices and bank branches, so we see the business from the inside. Clients rarely complain about the design. They complain about delays, poor finishing and costs that grew. Get those right and the work keeps coming.
Design studio or fit-out company?
| Model | What you sell | Startup capital | Risk | Income per project |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Design only | Layouts, 3D visuals, material and furniture schedules | Low | Low | Lower |
| Design and supply | Design plus sourcing furniture, lighting, decor | Medium | Medium | Medium |
| Design and fit-out | Design plus full installation on site | Higher | Higher | Higher |
Many designers start with design only, build a portfolio, and add supply and fit-out once they have trusted fundis and some cash.

For design software, SketchUp with D5 Render or Enscape is the most common pairing among interior designers here. Our guide to the best software for architects and designers compares them.

Where do you source materials?
Tanzanian interiors mix local and imported materials:
- Local: hardwood joinery from skilled carpenters, gypsum ceilings, terrazzo, local stone, woven sisal and palm, makuti for outdoor areas, kitenge and other fabrics.
- Imported: porcelain tiles, laminates, sanitary ware, lighting and many furniture lines, mostly sourced through Kariakoo dealers or imported directly.
Local craft is a strength. Clients and hotels increasingly want interiors that feel Tanzanian rather than like a catalogue from abroad, and local makers often deliver faster and can repair what they made. For the technical side of finishes, see our guides on ceiling types and floor finishes.
How do you price interior design?
Common ways to charge:
- Per square metre for design, with a higher rate for full 3D and detailed drawings.
- A percentage of the fit-out cost, often around 8 to 15 percent for design and supervision.
- A fixed fee per room or package, popular for homes.
- Supply margin on furniture and fittings you source, stated openly.
For fit-out, price like a contractor: measure quantities, price materials and labour, add overheads, contingency and profit. Our guide on how to price a construction job shows the method.
How to run a fit-out without losing money
- Take a deposit before ordering materials, especially imported or custom items.
- Confirm site measurements yourself. Never order joinery from old drawings.
- Order long-lead items early, and tell the client the delivery times in writing.
- Protect finished work. Cover floors and joinery while other trades work.
- Coordinate with electricians and plumbers before closing ceilings and walls.
- Snag carefully before handover. Our snagging checklist works for interiors too.
Do you need registration?
For a formal business you will need registration with BRELA, a TIN and a business licence. Pure design work does not need contractor registration. For fit-outs that involve building works on commercial projects, larger clients and tenders often ask for registration with the Contractors Registration Board as a specialist contractor; see CRB contractor classes. Many designers partner with a registered contractor for those jobs instead.

How do you find clients?
- Instagram and Pinterest: interior design sells on pictures. Post real projects, before and after.
- Property developers and estate agents: furnished show units sell and rent faster.
- Hotels and lodges: refurbishments come round every few years.
- Architects and contractors: they get asked about interiors all the time.
- Offices moving or expanding: watch for new office buildings in your city.

Mistakes to avoid
- Sharing full 3D designs before the client pays the design fee.
- Using rendered images of projects you did not do.
- Ordering custom items without a signed approval of drawings and finishes.
- Underestimating delivery times for imported goods.
- Ignoring ventilation, daylight and heat. A beautiful room that is too hot is not a good design. See how to keep a house cool.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a degree to be an interior designer in Tanzania?
No licence is required for interior design itself, but training in design, drawing and materials makes a big difference. Short courses plus experience with a designer or fit-out company are a common path.

It varies widely. Some charge per square metre for design, others a percentage of the fit-out cost, often around 8 to 15 percent, or a fixed fee per room.

It can be, especially with fit-out and supply. Profit depends on pricing properly, controlling site costs and getting paid in stages.
What software do interior designers use?
SketchUp with a rendering tool such as D5 Render or Enscape for visuals, and AutoCAD for detailed drawings.
