Best Software for Architects and Architectural Drawings in 2026: Paid and Free Options

AutoCAD, Revit, Archicad or SketchUp? Here is what each one is good at, what it costs, and what architects in Tanzania actually use.

The best software for architects depends on the work. For 2D drawings such as plans, sections and permit drawings, AutoCAD is still the standard in Tanzania and most of East Africa. For full building models that produce drawings, schedules and quantities automatically (BIM), Revit and Archicad lead. SketchUp is the fastest way to model and show ideas to clients, and Twinmotion, D5 Render, Enscape and Lumion turn those models into realistic images. If you are starting out on a tight budget, FreeCAD, LibreCAD, Blender and the free tiers of D5 Render and Twinmotion cover a lot of ground.

We work with architects' drawings every week. The files that cause the fewest problems on site are clear, well-layered and consistent, and that depends more on the person than the program. Still, the right software saves a lot of hours.

AutoCAD: still the language of drawings

Most councils, engineers, quantity surveyors and contractors in Tanzania exchange drawings as DWG files or PDFs made from them. That makes AutoCAD the safest skill for any architect or draughtsperson here. It is excellent for floor plans, sections, elevations, site plans and construction details.

AutoCAD LT costs much less and handles 2D work only, which is all many small practices need. Students and teachers can get Autodesk software free through Autodesk's education plan.

The weakness of AutoCAD is that every drawing is separate. Change a window on the plan and you must change it on the elevation and the section too. On a big project, that is where mistakes come from.

Revit and Archicad: modelling the whole building

BIM software builds a 3D model of the building, and the plans, sections, elevations and schedules all come from that one model. Move a wall and every drawing updates. You can also pull out quantities of walls, doors and finishes, which quantity surveyors love.

  • Revit is the most common BIM tool for larger firms and international projects, and it works well with engineers using Revit for structure and services. It needs a powerful computer and a few months of learning.
  • Archicad is popular with small and medium practices, runs on Mac and Windows, and many architects find it quicker to learn than Revit.

If you plan to work on large commercial, hospital, airport or donor-funded projects, clients increasingly require BIM.

SketchUp: the fastest way to show an idea

SketchUp is easy to learn and quick to model in, which is why so many Tanzanian architects and interior designers use it for concept designs and client presentations. A client who cannot read a floor plan understands a 3D model in seconds. There is a free web version for personal use, and SketchUp Pro adds LayOut for producing drawing sheets.

SketchUp is not the best tool for full construction drawing sets, so most firms pair it with AutoCAD.

Rendering: turning models into pictures clients love

Rendering software adds materials, light, sky and people to your model to produce realistic images and walkthrough videos.

  • Twinmotion is free for students and for companies below a set annual revenue, which covers most small practices in Tanzania.
  • D5 Render has a free community version and is fast on a good graphics card.
  • Enscape plugs straight into Revit, SketchUp and Archicad.
  • Lumion is long established for landscapes and animation.

All of them need a dedicated graphics card. On a basic laptop they will be slow or will not run.

Free software that does real work

If you are a student or starting a practice with little money, you can still produce professional drawings:

  1. LibreCAD for 2D drafting with DWG-like workflows.
  2. FreeCAD for 3D and BIM, with a growing architecture toolset.
  3. Blender for modelling and high-quality rendering.
  4. SketchUp Free in the browser for simple models.
  5. D5 Render community and Twinmotion (within their free terms) for visualisation.

The trade-off is time. Free tools have smaller communities in Tanzania, so finding help and exchanging files with others takes more effort.

What computer do you need?

UseMinimum we would suggest
2D drafting (AutoCAD LT, LibreCAD)Core i5 or Ryzen 5, 8 GB RAM, SSD
SketchUp and light 3DCore i7 or Ryzen 7, 16 GB RAM, SSD
BIM (Revit, Archicad)Core i7 or Ryzen 7, 16 to 32 GB RAM, dedicated graphics
Rendering (D5, Twinmotion, Lumion)32 GB RAM, recent NVIDIA RTX graphics card

Add a UPS. Power cuts in the middle of a long render or an unsaved drawing hurt, and a UPS also protects the computer from voltage swings.

Apps for site visits and client meetings

  • Autodesk Viewer or the AutoCAD mobile app to open DWG files on a phone or tablet.
  • Bluebeam Revu or a good PDF editor for marking up drawings and checking dimensions.
  • Measuring apps with laser measures for surveys of existing buildings before renovation.
  • Google Earth for site context, roads and neighbouring buildings.

For apps that help run projects on site, see our guide to the best apps for construction companies.

What do builders need from your drawings?

From the contractor's side, the best software is the one that produces drawings we can build from without guessing. Whatever you use:

  • Dimension everything, and make sure dimensions add up.
  • Keep plans, sections and elevations consistent with each other.
  • Include a door and window schedule.
  • Show levels, falls for drainage and roof slopes.
  • Coordinate with the structural engineer's drawings.
  • Number revisions clearly and send the latest version to everyone.

Frequently asked questions

Which software do architects use most in Tanzania?

AutoCAD for drawings, with SketchUp for 3D and presentations. Revit and Archicad are growing, especially in larger firms and on international projects.

Is AutoCAD or Revit better for a beginner?

Start with AutoCAD to learn drawing standards and how buildings are put together on paper, then learn Revit or Archicad. Many employers still ask for AutoCAD first.

Can I design a house with free software?

Yes. LibreCAD or FreeCAD for drawings and Blender or SketchUp Free for 3D can produce a full permit set. It takes longer, and sharing files with consultants may need extra care.

Is SketchUp good enough for permit drawings?

SketchUp Pro with LayOut can produce drawings, but most firms find AutoCAD faster for detailed 2D sets. Use SketchUp for design and presentation.

What laptop is best for Revit?

One with a recent Core i7 or Ryzen 7 processor, at least 16 GB of RAM (32 GB is better), an SSD and a dedicated NVIDIA graphics card.
