Solar Power for a New House in Tanzania: Sizing, Costs and Wiring It In

Solar works best when it is planned with the house, not added later. Here is how to size it and what to build in from the start.

For a typical family house in Tanzania, a solar system that backs up lights, sockets, the fridge, TV and Wi-Fi during TANESCO power cuts is usually 1 to 3 kW of panels, a 3 to 5 kVA inverter and 5 to 10 kWh of lithium battery storage, costing roughly TSh 6 to 18 million installed in 2026. Running the whole house off-grid, including cooking, water heating and air conditioning, needs a much larger system. Solar is easiest and cheapest when you plan it while the house is being designed: roof direction, roof strength, a battery room and separate circuits for the loads you want backed up.

Why plan solar during construction?

Adding solar later is possible, but it usually means cutting into finished walls for cables, building an inverter shelf in a corner that was never meant for it, and finding the roof faces the wrong way. During construction you can:

  • Face the largest roof slope north (in Tanzania the sun is mostly to the north for much of the year, though close to the equator it moves overhead) and keep it free of water tanks and vents.
  • Design the roof structure to carry the extra weight of panels and to resist wind uplift.
  • Run conduits from the roof to the inverter position and to the main distribution board.
  • Split the distribution board so essential circuits (lights, sockets, fridge, router, borehole pump) are separate from heavy loads (cooker, water heater, air conditioning).
  • Leave a ventilated, shaded space for the inverter and batteries, away from bedrooms and out of the sun.

How do I size a solar system for my house?

Start with what you actually want to run, not with a package someone is selling. Add up the power and the hours:

ApplianceTypical powerHours a dayDaily energy
15 LED lights150 W in total50.75 kWh
Fridge (efficient)100 to 150 W runningCycles all day1 to 1.5 kWh
TV and decoder100 W50.5 kWh
Wi-Fi router and phone charging30 W240.7 kWh
Laptop60 W60.36 kWh
Borehole or booster pump750 W10.75 kWh
Example totalabout 4 to 4.5 kWh a day

For that example, a system with about 2 kW of panels, a 5 kVA hybrid inverter and around 5 to 10 kWh of lithium battery would cover the day and keep the essentials running through a long evening outage. A water heater, electric cooker or air conditioner each adds several kWh a day, which is why most families keep those on TANESCO or use gas and solar water heating instead.

How much does a home solar system cost in Tanzania?

Rough 2026 examples, supplied and installed:

  • Small backup (lights, TV, Wi-Fi, phones): about TSh 2 to 5 million.
  • Family backup (above plus fridge, pump, laptops): about TSh 6 to 18 million.
  • Large or near off-grid (most of the house, some air conditioning): TSh 25 million and up.

Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries cost more at the start than lead-acid batteries but last many more cycles and need no topping up, so they usually work out cheaper over 10 years. All prices are examples and change with exchange rates and brands. USD equivalents are roughly TSh 2,600 per USD.

What should I check before hiring a solar installer?

  1. Registration and experience. Ask for completed jobs you can visit and for the installer's licence or registration details.
  2. Brand names in writing. The quote should name the panel, inverter and battery brands and models, with warranty periods.
  3. Proper protection. DC isolators, fuses or breakers, surge protection and correct earthing. Our guide to lightning protection and earthing explains why this matters.
  4. Roof fixing method. Panels should be fixed into the roof structure with sealed brackets, not just screwed through the sheets.
  5. Monitoring. Most hybrid inverters have an app so you can see production and battery state.

Can solar replace TANESCO completely?

It can, but for most town houses it is not the best value. A grid connection is still cheap per unit, and solar sized for 100 percent of the load in the rainy season needs a lot of panels and batteries. Most of our clients keep the TANESCO connection and use solar to cut bills and ride through outages. On rural plots far from the grid, a full off-grid system can make sense.

Frequently asked questions

How many solar panels does a 3-bedroom house need?

For backup of the essentials, typically four to eight modern panels of around 400 to 550 W each. Running everything, including air conditioning, needs far more.

Do solar panels work in the rainy season?

Yes, but output can drop a lot on cloudy days. Size the battery and keep the grid or a generator as a backup for long cloudy spells.

How long do solar panels last?

Good panels usually carry a 20 to 25 year performance warranty. Inverters often last 7 to 12 years and lithium batteries around 10 years, depending on use.

Does solar affect my roof warranty?

It can if the panels are fixed badly. Use brackets made for your roof type and seal every fixing.
