A tipper truck business in Tanzania earns by delivering sand, aggregate, hardcore, soil and building waste for builders, contractors, block makers and road projects. To start, you need a truck (a used tipper often costs from about TSh 60 million to over TSh 200 million depending on size, age and condition), a LATRA goods vehicle licence, registration and insurance, a licensed heavy-vehicle driver, and relationships with legal sand and quarry suppliers. Profit depends less on the price per trip than on keeping the truck busy, controlling fuel and repairs, and choosing an honest driver.
We order sand, aggregate and hardcore for every project, and we have used good and bad truck owners. The good ones deliver the volume they promise, on time, from legal sources. They are never short of work.
Who needs tipper trucks?
- Building contractors and fundis: sand, aggregate, hardcore and soil for every house and building.
- Block and concrete businesses: daily supply of sand and aggregate. See how to start a block making business.
- Road contractors: gravel, sub-base and fill. Our post on road construction layers shows how much material roads use.
- Hardware shops and material yards that resell sand and aggregate.
- Site clearing and demolition: carrying away rubble and waste.
What kind of truck should you buy?
| Truck | Typical load | Good for | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small tipper (light truck) | A few m³ | Small sites, tight streets | Lower cost, more trips |
| 6-wheeler | Around 8 to 12 m³ | Most building sites | Common starting point |
| 10-wheeler | Around 15 to 20 m³ | Large sites, roads, yards | Higher earnings per trip, needs good access |
Load sizes vary by body. Never load beyond the legal axle limits.
Used trucks are cheaper but carry repair risk. Before buying, have a trusted mechanic check the engine, gearbox, hydraulics, chassis for cracks and the tipping body. Ask for service records. Check that the logbook and ownership documents are clean.

What licences and documents do you need?
- Business registration with BRELA, a TIN and a business licence.
- Vehicle registration with TRA.
- A goods vehicle licence from LATRA, the Land Transport Regulatory Authority. LATRA reviews its licensing categories and fees, so check the current requirements.
- Insurance: at least third party by law; comprehensive is wise for an expensive truck.
- A driver with the right heavy-vehicle licence class.
- Legal sources for sand and aggregate. Extraction needs permits, and buying from illegal river sand mining can get your truck impounded. The Mining Commission and local authorities regulate extraction.
TANROADS weighbridges enforce axle load limits on main roads. Overloading brings heavy fines, damages roads and wears out your truck faster.
How much can a tipper truck earn?
Earnings depend on how many trips the truck makes, the distance, and whether you sell the material or only transport it. Here is a simple example for one 6-wheeler. All figures are illustrative 2026 examples, not real rates.
| Item | Example per month (TSh) |
|---|---|
| Trips per month | 50 |
| Average income per trip (material and delivery) | 350,000 |
| Revenue | 17,500,000 |
| Material cost (sand or aggregate at source) | 6,000,000 |
| Fuel | 4,000,000 |
| Driver and turnboy | 1,500,000 |
| Repairs, tyres, service | 1,800,000 |
| Insurance, licences, parking, levies | 700,000 |
| Profit before tax and loan repayments | 3,500,000 |
Notice how much goes on fuel and repairs. A truck that breaks down for two weeks can wipe out a month's profit. If the truck is on a loan, the monthly repayment comes out of that profit too.
Choosing and managing a driver
The driver controls your most expensive asset every day. Many owners lose money not on the market but on undeclared trips, fuel sold on the side, and rough driving. Protect yourself:
- Hire on references, and check the licence and driving record.
- Pay a fair wage plus a trip bonus, so honest work pays better than cheating.
- Install a GPS tracker to see where the truck goes and how long it stands.
- Agree trip prices yourself with regular customers, and take payment by mobile money or bank.
- Check fuel against kilometres every week.
How do you find steady customers?
- Contractors: a contractor running several sites can keep a truck busy for months. Deliver the volume you promise; short loads lose contracts.
- Block yards and concrete businesses: they need sand every day.
- Hardware shops that sell sand and aggregate.
- Road projects: subcontract haulage on council and TARURA roads.
- WhatsApp and site visits: visit new sites in growing areas and leave your number with the foreman.
Material quality matters as much as delivery. Clean sand without too much silt makes stronger concrete and plaster. Our Swahili guide to the sand and aggregate business explains how to judge quality.

Growing the business
Once one truck is profitable and well run, owners often add a second truck, an excavator or loader for hire, or their own stockpile yard. Our guide to the equipment hire business covers machines that pair well with tippers. Grow only when the first truck's records show real profit after repairs and loan payments.
Mistakes to avoid
- Buying a cheap truck without a mechanic's inspection.
- Overloading to earn more per trip.
- Buying sand from illegal sources.
- Letting the driver set prices and collect cash.
- Having no repair fund. Tyres and hydraulics fail at the worst times.
Frequently asked questions
Is a tipper truck business profitable in Tanzania?
It can be, if the truck stays busy and you control fuel, repairs and the driver. Many owners lose money through breakdowns and undeclared trips, not low prices.
How much does a used tipper truck cost?
Roughly from about TSh 60 million for an older, smaller truck to well over TSh 200 million for a newer 10-wheeler. Inspect carefully before buying.
Do I need a LATRA licence for a tipper?
Yes. Goods-carrying vehicles operating commercially need a LATRA licence. Check the current category and fee with LATRA.
Should I sell material or only transport it?
Selling material and delivery together usually earns more per trip, but needs cash to buy material and reliable legal sources.
Need materials delivered to a well-run site?
