A borehole for a house in Tanzania typically costs about TSh 6 million to 20 million (about USD 2,300 to 7,700) in 2026, including the hydrogeological survey, permit, drilling, casing, pump and a storage tank. The biggest factor is depth: shallow boreholes in parts of Dar es Salaam may be 30 to 80 metres deep, while dry or rocky areas can need 100 metres or more. Every borehole needs a water use permit from the Basin Water Board for the area, and the water should be tested before you drink it.

What does a borehole cost, item by item?

ItemExample cost
Hydrogeological surveyTSh 500,000 to 1,500,000 (about USD 190 to 580)
Basin Water Board permit and feesSet by the board, check current rates
Drilling and casing, per metreTSh 60,000 to 150,000 (about USD 23 to 58)
Submersible pump, installedTSh 1,500,000 to 4,500,000 (about USD 580 to 1,730)
Solar pumping system (instead of mains power)TSh 3,000,000 to 8,000,000 (about USD 1,150 to 3,100)
Elevated tank and stand, 5,000 litresTSh 2,000,000 to 4,500,000 (about USD 770 to 1,730)
Water quality testTSh 100,000 to 300,000 (about USD 40 to 115)

Example prices only. Costs vary a lot with depth, geology and region. USD figures are approximate, using roughly TSh 2,600 per USD.

Why do you need a survey before drilling?

A hydrogeological survey uses the local geology, nearby boreholes and often a geophysical test to choose the best spot and estimate depth. Drilling without one risks a dry or salty borehole, which costs almost as much as a good one.

Do you need a permit to drill a borehole in Tanzania?

Yes. Groundwater is managed by the Basin Water Boards under the Ministry of Water, for example the Wami/Ruvu Basin in Dar es Salaam and Coast. Drilling without permission and paying the fees can lead to fines. The usual process:

  1. Apply to the Basin Water Board for a drilling permit, with the survey report.
  2. Use a registered drilling contractor.
  3. Submit the drilling records after the work.
  4. Hold a water use permit and pay any annual charges.

How deep will my borehole be?

Area typeTypical depth range
Coastal sandy areas30 to 80 m
Inland plains60 to 120 m
Rocky or dry highlands100 to 200 m

Typical ranges only; your survey gives the estimate for your plot. Coastal boreholes can be salty if drilled too deep or too close to the sea.

Is a borehole better than a DAWASA or RUWASA connection?

Public water connectionBorehole
Upfront costLowerHigher
Running costMonthly billsPower or solar, maintenance
ReliabilityDepends on supplyGood if the borehole is well sited
Water qualityTreatedMust be tested and sometimes treated
PermitsUtility processBasin Water Board permit

Many homes use both: the public supply when available, plus a borehole or rainwater tank as backup. Contact DAWASA in Dar es Salaam or RUWASA in rural areas for connections.

How do you keep a borehole working?

  • Service the pump every year.
  • Keep the borehole head sealed and raised above flood level.
  • Test the water at least once a year.
  • Do not over-pump in the dry season.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to drill a borehole in Dar es Salaam?

Often TSh 6 million to 15 million (about USD 2,300 to 5,800) for a house, including pump and tank, depending on depth.

How long does it take to drill a borehole?

Drilling itself often takes one to five days. With the survey, permit and installation, plan for several weeks.

Can I drink borehole water?

Only after a laboratory test shows it is safe. Some water needs filtering, softening or disinfection.

What if my borehole is dry?

Most contracts still charge for the drilling done. A good survey reduces the risk, and some contractors offer terms for dry holes; agree them in writing.
